I have chosen to expand essay number one on Steve Craig's article "Men's Men and Women's Women."This essay if very rich for expansion, I can find various other commercials that fit the stereotype of the initial commercial I used in essay one. There are many commercials out there so there is a wide selection for me to choose from and analyze, which will be very helpful for me in the end.
Ideas to expand.
1. Talk about all the stereotypes' that Craig mentions in his article.
2. Find out commercials that match the characteristics perfectly or i could do the exact opposite and fins commercials for each category and explain how society has changed the definition of a "Man's Man" "Women's Women" etc.
3. Compare my Cadillac SRX commercial I initially used for the essay with other commercials that fit well with Women's Women breaking stereotype.
4.Use more than just one commercial to lengthen my essay.
5. go in depth on commercials back in the time period when "Mens Men and Women's Women" was created and compare them to new aged commercials we television watchers see today.

There are a lot of commercials on television that can help you for your essay. If you wanted to you could even compare the different commercials on different channels. If I remember correctly Steve Craig mentions that the stereotype commercial also depends on the channel broadcasting it. Also i really like your 2nd "ideas to expand" plan about possibly explaining "how society has changed the definition of a 'Man's Man' 'Women's Women.'" it seems interesting and would be really cool to hear more about. I also like the 5th one as well. I think it would be cool to write about commercials then and now. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI think it is a great idea to expand the "men's men and women's women", it was our first essay and I feel there is still so much to be said about it. I would recommend also analyzing a print ad to enforce the idea that it isn't always JUST commericals. I think that will make your claim much stronger. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteYou have good points to start with. I wrote my essay on Women's Men and used 'Axe' commercial and argued on how advertisers use such ideas to make people buy their products . You can also argue on how female body is being used to advertise products, even in men's commercials. You can use Victoria's Secret's ads to support you idea of how women are being influenced to adopt figures like their models. Hope it'll help a bit. Good luck!
Great topic to choose!I suggest for "Woman's Woman", you shoul try using a makeup or shampoo commercial and for "Men's Men", try using a sports comercial. Ex. Football commercial, NASCAR commercial, ect. Hope this helps...
ReplyDeleteGood start and nice suggestions from your peers. Since you seem to be looking for an ad that breaks at least some of Craig's definitions, I would find one where the women is seen at work. His definition of a woman's woman ignores these ads. An older one that comes to mind is one for 5 Hour Energy. The working woman comes home, exhausted, to a house of kids and a husband on the couch. She now needs to make dinner, etc. So, she is a woman that is relatable and trying to balance all the demands placed on her (as Craig says), but she has this extra layer of work and financial responsibilities.

I feel like you could go many ways with this particular topic because there are so many commercials to choose from but i really enjoy your 2nd idea on how you could expand, I feel that would make it very interesting and have people look at the situation from a completely different point of view. ReplyDeleteYou seem to have a good idea of what you want to do for your expansion essay. Since you have so many options on how to expand your essay, you have plenty of hard evidence to choose from. Of course you would want to use more than one commercial, and you could also include a print ad like Professor Antinora suggested. You could use clothes commercials, because they use models to sell their products. Another commercial you could take a look at is Burger King's "I Am Man" TV ad.
